People are always killed by the guns from the other side.
Blood is always spilled by enemy lines.
The fear is thicker than air in this war zone.
Bodies are lying there.
It hurts people every day takes them away
It bleeds people who fight for the war
It makes you very sad.
To see this world that is always bad.

Crystal Crest realm the human realm.
I sat in my apartment with my boyfriend by my side, and the memories of my abusive ex still haunt me. All those names he called me, and those women he slept with after we broke up turning him cruel enough to hit me. I got out of there, and moved on. Michael who is my current boyfriend helped me heal from it, and I was flipping through a paper when the headline front page stops me cold.
Jerry Sanderson found dead in apartment suspect is Charlotte Rain who had been dating Jerry for a few years. The two fought when it turns out Jerry was cheating on his girlfriend with another woman.
“I will be over him, Michael because look at the news article.” Michaels green eyes widened when I showed him the article.
“Okay can you stop obsessing over him now? He was a jerk now let it go.”
“I did though, and now I can really move on.”
Michael shook his head, “Well, I know what he did to you, and now you can rest easy.”
I sigh, “Yes, I can now that he is dead.”
He gave me a wicked smile, “And now I am going to do something to make sure he is well and truly dead.”
He has been my boyfriend for a few years, and a powerful necromancer. We had a fight over my ex since the abuse Jerky Jerry put me through still lingered in my mind. Now he can do something about my ex even though Jerry is dead.
A wet tear fell down my face, and I wiped it off. Michael never came home after the talk. I thought he went to his Mom’s house to cool off, and think about where we will go from here. I called her to talk to Michael, and apologize to him about my behavior in thinking about my ex.
I picked up a phone at my apartment, and dial the number to his mom’s house. It rang and rang until, “Hello?”
“Hi, is Michael there?” I asked unsure of her mind at this point.
“Who are you? And why are you calling my house?”
“It’s Michelle, Michael’s girlfriend.”
“Oh how are you doing, dear?”
“Do you know where Michael is?”
What she said made me nervous, “Oh strange I think he is somewhere else. What are we talking about again?”
“He did not walk in the house, but he was here in the yard with a dirty shovel in his hands.”
“And then what else happened?” I ask hoping she would stop being spaced out enough to tell me what is going on.
“He went somewhere carrying a heavy black plastic bag. I could tell he was struggling with it, but when I asked if he needed help he told me to leave him alone. What are we talking about again?”
“We are talking about your son Michael. What happened next?”
“He left after that, and went somewhere, but did not tell me where. He did not even tell me why he is upset which is even stranger because we always talk. I’m feeling really worried about him is he okay? Would you be a dear, and find him for me? Oh well, better get back to housework.”
I thanked her, and told a few little white lies, and hung up. She seemed out of it probably hopped up on pain medication thanks to her back bugging her all the time. It was probably nothing—she probably just saw him taking out the trash, or something equally noxious, and it hadn’t registered that he already did that. Sometimes she got stuck in her own world, and couldn’t really tell what was happening around her. It was nothing major, right? But… what was he doing with a shovel? I knew he wouldn’t be gardening—he didn’t have a garden. Besides, he lived in an apartment. Odd indeed and it had me freaking out as well.
I thought of all the places where he might have gone. I want to find the answer to this little mystery. I visited all his usual haunts, and I still could not find him, which was weird. Since he never disappeared like this ever, and he at least left a note as to where he will be when he does leave. This case of the missing boyfriend was getting even stranger.
I got the key to his apartment from under the welcome mat; A place he keeps the key just for me. I want to search there thinking he could be inside. I thought he would be anywhere but here considering he hates to be cooped up in the apartment for too long. I checked his art studio, and made sure he was not there to surprise me. A part of me thought he would set up a place, and make me a nice romantic dinner as an apology. That is, so sappy it makes me want to puke; enough of that. I looked around to see if he left anything, and to find clues as to what happened to him. I checked the living room. Nothing. The kitchen yielded no results either.
His bedroom was an entirely different matter altogether. I found a few candles in his drawer, and a Book Of Shadows. A Book of Shadows? That’s a spellbook for witches. What the hell is he doing with one of those? Really I told him to not do it, and does he listen? No. I knew he was into it, but now I have proof he is.
I even found a key that led to his basement. A part of me screamed, “Don’t do it unarmed you stupid bitch. Do you want to end up dead like all the girls that walk into creepy basements unarmed?”
I laugh, realizing how stupid it is to go into a dark, ominous, and in the spooky basement without a gun or a knife. All the dumb heroines do it in the movies, and then they get killed. I thought that for a moment, and then decided to save myself from the same fate by grabbing Michael’s gun out of his safe. A .45 caliber handgun made by Zack’s Armory. I learned how to fire it thanks to Michael. He taught me how to load, aim for the target, pull back the hammer, and then fire it. He even taught me how to clean it. I got to go with him to the range every Saturday. Of course, if he dies I will not be doing that anymore. I try not to think about that line of thought. I shook my head not really wanting to assume the worst. There must be a logical explanation for what happened to him, and maybe things were not as bad as they seem.
I finally got the courage to open the dreaded basement door, and the basement was huge like an underground Cold War bunker. I turned on the lights to brighten the already dark room. The gun was already loaded with a round in the chamber. The slide was pulled back, and I aim at the room. I feel kick ass and ready to fire holes in the asshole that hurt my boyfriend… or the boyfriend. You know. Whatever. I search the room for more clues, burned down candles found, and a pentacle etched into the dusty floor. Herbs still going, and smoldering in a brazier? Interesting, he must be doing a ritual of some kind, but there was no sign of him.
I spot another book on the floor the title, “The Idiots Guide to Exorcisms.” Huh? Damn. I had a feeling I know where this is going.
I heard something make a scratching noise. My heart started to pound. I froze up scared out of my mind. I started to panic then I snapped myself out of it because of the Desert eagle in my hand. I pointed the gun in places trying to shoot whatever made that sound. I tried to tell myself it was only a rat—Michael hadn’t reallybeenthatstupid.
A zombie coming towards me it looked like my ex Jerry Sanderson, and it was him. The blonde hair he has is no longer smooth and long, but in patches on his head with his skull showing through. He did not have his alert blue eyes full of laughter; instead they are just black holes in his head. His flesh was coming off his bones, and hanging in places with his intestines hanging out of his stomach. Yuck! I know a zombie when I see one since he even smells like rotting flesh. I flashed back to a scene that made me remember why they eat living people. I started to panic because I don’t want to get eaten right now.
I aimed and shot at Jerry the Zombie in the heart, and it fell down thankfully. I got close to it to see if it was truly dead. It moved and I aimed for the head, and shoot it until the zombie stopped trying to get up which took 3 shots . The bangs were so loud my ears rang from the noise reverberating up and down my skull. I began shaking, and I looked at the thing realizing it looked like my ex-boyfriend.
I looked over, and who is that I spot? Michael. I found him finally, or he found me. Michael looked like a mess: dirty clothes, dirt in his dirty blonde hair, and a cut on his lip. He looked around noticed the zombie smiled, and said to me, “Hey, Michelle. Good thing I taught you how to fire a gun.” He is not dead, but alive and only injured a little.
“Hey, dumbass,” I reply sarcastically, “don’t ever try to mess with dead things again. I have no idea how you managed to make a zombie when it was an exorcism book. If you try this kind of idiocy again, I will not bail you out. The next time I will not only let it eat you, always assuming that I don’t shoot you myself.”
I glare at him trying to get him to realize how dangerous this stuff was. I doubt mind control would get through his thick skull anyway.
“You’re right. I shouldn’t have tried to combine voodoo and exorcism together. You did do a good job with the shooting.”
He hugged me, and I found myself stupid enough to melt in his arms. “I am still mad at you since you could’ve been killed. NEVER do this again, and it could have killed you.”
I smiled, “Lesson learned not to mess with the dead anymore? And to buy me dinner, and roses instead for an apology?”
He nodded, “And by the way, it was your abusive ex I rose from the dead. I thought that was a better way to say sorry then making you dinner, but I will do dinner and roses instead. I am a good necromancer boyfriend.”
I looked at him and smiled. “I do appreciate the gesture since me shooting him did release all the rage I felt toward him for putting me through all those horrible things.”
He gave me closure from the past, and a brighter future to look forward to. Most of all he healed me, and that is something I am very grateful for.
I looked at him, “I love you, and I am sorry for bringing up my evil ex too much. And fighting our relationship by pushing you away.”
He got down on one knee, “Michelle, will you marry me?”
I said the only answer that came to mind. “Yes, I will.”
He kissed me and then I realized we will both have a happy life together.

But something big is happening with the Agency and operatives are dying. Will she find out what it is before it's too late, or will the Agency be destroyed?
First Agency operative: Salina Sinclaire
It was the first day of school, and I was excited to start the school year with my cute
boyfriend, Roger. His good looks made everyone jealous of me for having him before
everyone else had the chance. He had brown hair streaked blonde at the tips, pretty blue
eyes, and a sweet personality to match, which made him a good catch.
I loved his scorpion tattoo and his sexy, muscular body. I had been with him for over
six months, and he made me happy, so happy that I wanted him move in with me. He
opened the door for me, and called me cute names. He was a sweetie, sending me love
notes, and walking me to my locker. He even had a promising future career in the mili-
tary. Things were going great.
The problem started when Laurice came into the picture. The first day of my senior
year, she walked toward me with beautiful long blonde hair and blue eyes with an attitude
that said she thought she was better than everyone else. I hated her from the beginning.
“Hi,” she said in a sickening-sweet voice. “I’m Laurice. I just transferred here. You
must be Roger’s puny girlfriend. Don’t worry; he’ll be mine when the time comes. I
doubt that you can handle a guy like him, anyway.” Then she walked away, and I glared
at her retreating back.
A few weeks later, Roger came to my house to pick me up for a date. I wore a red
dress that accentuated my body and made my eyes pop. My heart beat hard within my
chest as his car pulled up in the driveway and he got out.
Roger was dressed in a tux, making him even cuter than usual. He smiled as his eyes
traveled up and down my body. “You look beautiful today.” Then, his look turned sad.
“We need to talk.”
It was never a good thing when a guy tells you that. My heart stopped, but I tried not
to let it bother me. “Okay, what is it?”
He sighed. “I’ve been seeing someone else, and we’re in love. I want to move in with
her. Let’s face it, you’re a side chick and we’re going to be apart for some time. I think I
have more of a future with her, and she’s the reason why I haven’t been contacting you
I glared at him. “I knew it. You look at her the way you used to look at me. You told
me lies just to use me for a place to stay. I’m happy that you didn’t move in with me yet.
Laurice had no issues about bragging that she was going to get you, and that you told her
you loved her. You told her that you would take her as soon as you saw her. You claimed
that it was to get closer to me, and that you weren’t going to sleep with her, but you lied.
You’re a jackass, trying to fool me into thinking that your brother is talking to me when it
was you. Thanks for saving me from being stuck to a lying douche bag.” I didn’t want to
go through this heartbreak again; it was as if I had just been shot to the chest. It was aw-
ful and bad. Suddenly, tears welled up in my eyes. I cannot help it. I wanted him to stay
in my life, but now I didn’t, since he was a lying, cheating asshole. I hated Laurice so
badly that I wanted her dead.
He shook his head. “Laurice was there for me when you weren’t. I would rather be
with someone who wants to stay home for the rest of her life. I was in love with you, but
I love her more because she at least obeys me, and doesn’t argue with me the way you
I glared at him. “I would hate to be stuck with you for the rest of my life. You’re
such a drama king, blowing everything out of proportion. You have a horrible temper,
and hit stuff when you’re frustrated. You told me to not put up a fuss in the morning, and
you’ve always tried to tell me what to do. I’m better off without you.”
A few months later...I opened the door to Southbend High School, and made my
way through the crowded halls to my locker, where students were packed like salmon
swimming upstream. I fought the current to get to my locker, dialed in my combination
on the lock, and opened it.
Black mud suddenly sprayed all over me, smelling like wet garbage on a hot summer
day. The smell of it was beginning to make me puke. It was all over me, in my grey eyes,
and covering my black hair, and my clothes were ruined.
Students surrounded me, and they put their hands to their noses as if they could smell
something horrid while they laughed at me.
I pushed them out of the way, not wanting to deal with their ridicule any longer. I
knew that Laurice was behind it, since she was jealous of me for some stupid reason. It
was always her, and no one else. No one could hurt me this badly and get away with it,
especially not her. I hated her for a reason, and I really wanted her to pay. How could she
do this to me? I knew she hated me, too, but really? Mud in my locker? I wiped the
sludge out of my eyes, hating that bitch with every fiber of my being.
I didn’t go to the rest of my classes. It didn’t matter, anyway, since they were show-
ing nothing but movies. I spread a towel across the car seat so the mud wouldn’t ruin the
interior. I didn’t want to explain to my mom why my car had black stains on the driver’s
seat. The drive to my house was painful since the memories of her pushing me around
still lingered fresh in my mind. I squeezed the steering wheel. Just thinking about that
bitch made me see red. I wanted her dead; she went too far this time. She was a cruel girl
with long sunflower-yellow hair, blue ice cold eyes, and a devious smile that said she
kicked puppies in her spare time. She always dressed in clothes so small that every part
of her body showed. Within minutes, I pulled into the driveway, arriving in record time.
I headed to my room first and the calming scent of lavender hit me. I picked out a
shirt, jeans, and clean socks and underwear to change into after my shower.
My mom, Rose, was home and heard me come through the door. She worked at
home doing data entry, which must be nice. My dad, Steven, worked at a job in a secret
company that he never talked about.
Mom took one look at me and was furious. “Who did this to you, honey? Was it Lau-
rice, the same girl who put pig’s blood in your locker? I don’t want them to brush it off
like they did last time. If I ever see Laurice or her mom in an alley, God help them be-
cause they’ll end up in a body bag for messing with you.”
I nodded. “Yes, it was Laurice Wingfield, the same one who always messes with me.
The same one who went after my ex. But good riddance to him since he was a lying,
cheating asshole who was using me as a side chick.” Her eyes looked away, and I knew
their picking on me finally got to her. First the blood and now the mud; at least she final-
ly saw that they had gone too far.
“Okay, honey, it’ll be taken care of. Go take a shower and I’ll call the principal about
this. By the way, he was a cheating jerk. You can do better. You deserve better since he
didn’t even text you for days at a time. When I think of all the time that you spent crying
over him when he treated you so horribly ... and he even blew you off for your birthday,
too! He was not good for you. But, honey, it gets better. My first love cheated on me, too.
You’ll heal from it, and find someone better than him ... someone who will call you and
talk to you when you call,” she said with a look in her eyes that can make a child cry. I
never wanted to be on the receiving end of that look since it meant serious trouble. She’ll
get Laurice since it wasn’t the first time that she told the school about the way she was
treating me. If she had to, I knew that she was file a police report. Then, maybe the
school would believe her this time.
I headed straight for the bathroom after the conversation we had together. I stripped
off the mud-covered clothes then put them in a plastic bag that I found underneath the
As I showered, I thought of all the ways I could kill the bitch who made my life hell.
Instead of thinking about taking the easy way out by killing myself, I made a decision: I
wanted to kill the bully instead. It led me down memory lane, thinking of my ex, Roger.
Roger ... the one who cheated on me with Laurice, the one who I loved until I realized
that he was using me. At that moment, I finally realized that he never really cared about
I took my time in the shower, watching as the water fell from the shower head to the
bottom of the tub. The sound calmed me, helping me to drown out the memory of Rog-
ers’s betrayal. After all, he wasn’t worth crying over. I had cried over him too many
times. For months after we broke up, I felt like a zombie, numb from the pain. Heartbreak
hurt more than any gunshot; at least those can be healed. He wouldn’t have cheated on
me the way he did if he cared about me ... and with Laurice, no less. After the shower, I
sat on the bed in my room. Tissues were piled up on the side table. A few minutes later, I
slipped into some pajamas and let sleep take me, until Mom woke me when she sat on the
edge of my bed. Her chocolate eyes were welling with tears as she took me in.
“Salina, you’ll find someone better, and the bullying will stop once you’re in college,
I promise. High school is cliquey and college isn’t. Then, you’ll make more friends,”
Mom told me, trying to cheer me up. She understood what it was like, since her first love
left her for some girl that he had knocked up and was forced to marry her. Mom moved
on, though, and found someone better, someone who loved her and adored her.
“Promise, Mommy?” I asked, weak from crying.
She gave me a weak smile. “I promise. Now, I’m going to call the school.” She
pulled me in for a hug and then left. Once she was gone, I took the time to sneak down
the stairs so I could listen in on the conversation, hoping that it would end Laurice’s bul-
“Hello,” she began. “May I speak with the principal?” She waited. “Thank you.” She
waited and then said into the phone a moment later, “Yes, my name is Rose Sinclair. Sa-
lina Sinclair’s mother, and a girl named Laurice Wingfield is picking on my daughter so
much that she’s coming home from school every day crying. In fact, she came home to-
day covered in mud because of Laurice. In fact, last week, she came home covered in
blood, again, due to Laurice. Something has to be done about this now. Don’t you
agree?” Knowing my mother, she was trying hard to control her temper.
She listened for a bit and then a few moments later, she asked, “Why would you al-
low Malians to be at the school in the first place? They’re dangerous to normal human
children. I thought you didn’t allow them in the Crystal Crest Realm. In fact, we had a
truce with them and they have to leave Crystal Crest alone. But now one seems to be in-
interested in taking out my daughter. You know what this means, don’t you?” she asked.
She listened to someone and then continued, “Okay, and then the truce will be over
and the Agency will get rid of them by using my daughter. Great, just great. Thanks a lot;
that is all I need to know.” Her voice dripped with sarcasm.
Agency? Using me? What was going on? My eyes widened, knowing that there was
more to the story than what Mom was telling me. But I hurried back to my bed, pretend-
ing that I hadn’t overheard her.
A few minutes later, Mom opened the door, and I pretended that I was asleep. She
closed the door. After she was gone, I followed her and stood in the same place as before,
listening, because I knew what would happen next.
“Steven,” she said into the phone, speaking to my father. “I resolved the bully prob-
lem, but you won’t like how I did it.” She laughed. “Yes, but you won’t like it since it has
to do with the Agency.” She waited a moment. “I know that you don’t want Salina in-
volved with it, but I had no choice.” There was another pause as she listened. “She might
be a Hunter, and you know what that means ...”
Hunter? First, Agency, then them using me? What next?
“Well, at least they have mentors to guide her, and teach her how to wield the pow-
ers without her going insane. At least she’s not a Fire Rager Witch. Then we might be in
trouble. But her genes are the ones attracting the Malian girl. That can’t be helped, but at
least it’ll sort itself out. She can handle it.”
There was a pause as she listened, then Mom said, “Yes, she can and we can’t inter-
fere since it was the mentor’s job to go over everything with her. All we can do is hope
that everything goes well, and that she will be okay once it happens.” Dad said something
as she listened. Then Mom said, “And I you.”
As she hung up the phone, I thought that my mom must have ingested some drugs.
Malians? Mentors? I felt like I was suddenly thrust into the Twilight Zone as I went back
to my room and slipped under the covers. Soon, I fell asleep not wanting to think about
how everything was now crazy, and that my world had just been turned upside down.

Being a Vampire in Retail Sucks:
Description: Scarlet Summers has been through hell since her last mission left her in the hands of an evil necromancer. She got out thanks to the Moon Wolf pack, but not without a price. When three of the werewolves in the pack go missing it is up to her to solve the case. In order to do this she has to go undercover at a supernatural retail store called Fiona's Corner and Café to find the missing girls.
I killed my ex-boyfriend, but that was because he killed my lover. I also killed Kelsey. She deserved it for going after vampires who were harmless to society, and especially since she killed Dante's family. Not that I go around ending lives for the hell of it. I worked for the Killer Contract Agency--hired to rid the Crystal Crest realm of society's slugs. Like rapists, pedophiles, and hunters who go after innocent supernatural creatures. The weapon made me insane, and after an undercover case, I decided to be a detective instead of an assassin. My name is Scarlet Summers, and I've been through hell.
The Moon Wolf Pack are the werewolves who helped me escape from the evil necromancer, Rick. A mystery is on my hands when some of the girls went missing. Oh, and the girls all had one more thing in common. They worked at Fiona’s Corner and Café, a retail store in the Luxor realm that allows creatures to buy the items they need to survive. Here is my story of these events.
A fire is burning in the fireplace and it makes the living room warm to combat the cold air conditioning running through the rest of the house. I use this time off to banish the memories of my last case, and the previous ones when I was with the agency. I finally have a chance to try to get my mind off my past once and for all.
It all started when Nathan killed Zion, my lover, since he was an abusive and jealous jerk. My grief led to me wanting retribution so fiercely that I was hired by The Killer Contract Agency. I then went on a killing frenzy eliminating Nicole, Megan, Kelsey, Kyle, and Nathan. I got my revenge, but not without a price. My final step was to swallow Nathan’s soul but, it caused me to go crazy and I ended up gunning down innocents. I was changed into a vampire to stop the rage from consuming me. Once I turned, the rage stopped and I became sane again. Then I was captured by a crazy necromancer named Rick, and he tried to turn humans into creatures by performing horrible experiments on them. I stopped Rick with help of the Moon Wolf pack. All of the old case files went into the fireplace, and the bracelet I still have as a reminder of what I have been through. I turn away from the fire and the past.
I look around the apartment I love. We moved into it after I became a vampire and we transferred to the Luxor realm. It is a big place with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, an office, kitchen, and even a library piled high with books. The walls in the living room are charcoal black and the carpeting is the color of warm blood with a gothic theme throughout the house: cobweb wallpapers with candelabras, and magical statues of wolves and dragons placed in the house to guard it from intruders.
Sitting down on the black leather sofa, I let the warm fire relax me. There is incense burning and the smell of apples and cinnamon take me to a place of comfort. The necromancer situation still haunts me, since I was tortured horribly. I don’t want to go into details, but I hate them. The asylum case was just as horrid. Especially seeing all those supernatural creatures hurt when they did not deserve it. I exhale and let it all go. I am on my vacation after all.
Dante, my lover, is rustling around papers in the office we share. Since I have nothing better to do, I go see what he was doing in the office. And maybe play around a bit on the computer.
"Come in.," he replies after I knock on the door since he loves to keep the door closed to concentrate.
"What are you working on?" I ask as I walk into the room and stand behind him, peering at his screen. I know he hates it when I do that but I just can't help but rile him a bit. He sighs and stretches, making me stare at the muscles flexing underneath his shirt.
"Shit loads thanks to the damn necromancer-werewolf-agency issues. I dislike Rick, and his bullshit about falsely helping people without powers. He just had to work in the Crystal Crest realm with the psychics to experiment on innocent creatures. At least the asylum is a black crater in the ground now. And all of their data on us is destroyed. "
"Fun, I love paperwork. But at least we no longer have to worry about the Crystal Crest realm becoming like ours."
He laughs and it lights up his entire face, making his soft silky black hair undulate around his handsome face. I stare at his muscles as they ripple with the simple gesture of him sweeping his hair out of his eyes. He turns his attention back to the screen in front of him and I sit down in a plush chair in the corner and watch him work.
I don’t pay attention to the time until I feel a gentle hand brush my long red hair behind my ear. My green eyes come back into focus after staring at nothing but remembering the experiments.
"Brooding again?" He asks concern in his brown eyes. He knows I dwell too much on the past, especially since it was a shock to my system.
"Yes," I reply sheepishly, "I was just thinking about our latest mission. All of the things the necromancer said he would do to my friend’s dead body still haunt me.” I shudder, trying not to think about it, and try to block out the images that are flooding my mind.
"Thinking of it only makes it worse. He is dead. The Asylum is a graveyard. You are going to drive yourself bonkers if you keep thinking about it. I agree with how horrible the whole situation was, and I wish I could pass on my extra abilities on to you. Then you would never have to fear. Do you think I like seeing you like this?” He asks.
"No, and I know it was hard on you as well. I’m sorry I still get lost in the past. At least the werewolves were able to save me." I say with a smile trying to focus on the good side of my experiences.
"They did but it also means you owe them a favor. Werewolves always collect their favors and sometimes it is dangerous. I know I owed them once, and payback nearly made me tied to a member of their pack." I sigh, not wanting to think about what they will want in return for saving my life.
“I want to check my email," and I hop behind the desk across from Dante's. My mind jumps to more essential everyday things like work and coupon shopping. I need some new clothes from Gothic Gear and Witch Cauldron and I hope that there are some money off coupons in my inbox.
I quickly get comfortable in the leather chair since it fits the shape of my body perfectly. I turn on my high-powered desktop and log into my personal email. I am disappointed when my inbox has nothing but Spam. No, I don’t want another vampire groupie, not after the last one died. Nope, I don’t want to meet single vampires in my area. Absolutely no to getting the biggest erection of my vampire life. All junk and no fun coupons for me. Frustrated, I decide to check my work email. Even though I am on vacation there might be something interesting going on to take my attention.
“Hey, look at this,” I tell Dante and he moves behind my chair. He looks over my shoulders to read what is on my computer screen.
"Why does he want to see you? I thought you were on vacation. I was looking forward to relaxing with you." He sighs, "Do you want me to go with you to the office?"
I nodded, "Special assignment sounds fun, but it also sounds like a handful. I just hope a necromancer isn't involved in this one. I hate those guys." I shudder again and push away the images from my past. Necromancers are notorious for getting zombies to do their dirty work. It is helpful to send one after someone you want dead because they are hard to kill. The only way to stop them is to cut off their head. "Let’s change, and then hit the road."
A little bit later, we slide into Dante’s Strider X, the fastest type of car in the realm. We quickly get to the store since Derrick is impatient. The sun is a horrid ball of heat frying everything in its path. The soft tank top I am wearing allows the cool leather from my seat to relieve my skin from the inferno. I don’t like the heat. I would rather it be an in-between temperature, not too hot or too cold.
Roger’s Video store is a front for the detective agency in the Luxor realm. King Alexander and Queen Diana Battle don't want anyone to know about either Derrick's Detective Agency or its partner the Killer Contract Agency. They work together to help solve crime and catch criminals for the crown.
Dante looks up at the sun. “At least the sun here is not toxic to us. I was a surfer before I changed into a vampire you know. I like still being able to surf; it is more fun with powers. And the donors and blood bags definitely make life easier. What about you Scarlet, do you love it?”
I consider my transition to being a vampire, “I love it, and it is so much better being sane. Thank you for turning me. I love having my magical powers and my spirit guardian.”
"Of course I remained after you changed. You need me to guide you and help in combat." Nightshade speaks in her melodious voice in my head.
"I am happy to have you too. You have saved my ass plenty of times. I will always be grateful to have you in my life." I commune back.
Nightshade has watched over me ever since I came into my power as a witch. I have been her charge to guide even before I received the bracelet. She became my permanent guardian when I put on the bracelet, and when I kept my powers during the transition she decided to stay with me. She is a spirit that stays by my left ear and is visible when she desires.
"It is amazing that you still remember when we first met," She comments knowing I am brooding on the past again.
"I always will because you saved my ass more times than I can count."
“I think we need to go into his office now,” Dante interrupts and I notice we have reached our destination. He knows about Nightshade and doesn't mind when we talk, he talks to his guardians too. The hell hounds: Cloud and Enforcer. Derrick is an impatient man and we both want to see what he wants.
“Sorry.” I reply sheepishly. “Nightshade was talking to me.” Dante is standing over me holding the door to the car for me to get out. He is such a gentleman! He takes my hand and squeezes it gently, then smiles warmly.
“Would you like it if I was in your mind more, not just when you are in danger?” Because Dante is my sire, we can talk telepathically. It comes in handy during battle or undercover cases when we need to speak privately. It also makes the romance between us so much better. I nod in response to his questions and we walk to the store to see what the boss wants.
Roger’s Videos store is a bright beige building with a black and white sign denoting the name on the front of the building. The bell tinkles as we go through the door. I look around the room with brightly lit shelves and neatly placed videos. We might need to rent one if the news sucks. Syron waves to us from behind the counter as we make our way to the back of the store. Past the public restrooms, we go into the office to find out what the boss wants.
Derrick Sanders, the owner and head of the detective agency, sits at his desk wearing his favorite camouflage clothes. His constant self-imposed distractions tell me he has seen more horrors than he will admit to. I don’t want to interrupt him so I wait until he stops typing and looks up at me before I speak.
"You wanted to see me sir?"
“Yup Scarlet,” he replied in his former army tone. He leans back in his chair and continues in the voice he used when he sent troops out for battle. “There is an issue that has come up involving Fiona’s corner and Café, the retail establishment. Some of the women from the Moon Wolf Pack have gone missing and all of them worked for Fiona’s. ”
My eyes widen, “The ones who helped me escape from the asylum?”
He nods, “Afraid so. The last place they were seen was their work place. Here are the files on the girls who are missing.” He hands me the files, and I take them with caution wondering who the unlucky girls are, and if I know them. Shania Wolfson, Sonya Simone, and Merica Laker. Phew, I never knew them personally. They are all very beautiful, and belong to Rex’s pack. Since they are part of the pack that rescued me from the necromancer the least I can do is try to find them. All three girls disappeared a few weeks after starting to work at the store.
Terrific, a retail store gone rancid, why am I not surprised? Honestly, it is not surprising to hear, especially since the boss is a 1,000-year-old vampire who use to use the store as a front for hurting creatures through horrific experiments. Luckily, it had stopped thanks to Derrick’s Detective Agency. At least I thought it had.
“Is this another find the missing women case or an undercover one?” I ask dreading the answer. I have a bad feeling I knew where this was going when his face changed to a look of sympathy.
“I want you to go undercover to find the missing girls. You will need to pose as an employee at the store. It is the best approach to get information on both the girls and the company. The werewolves have asked for you specifically, as payment for your debt.”
“I can’t wait to see you in an adorable little uniform!” Nightshade teases, he voice filled with mirth.
“Great,” I comment with feigned enthusiasm, “Just what I always wanted to do; work retail!” I sigh, and he gives me the rest of the paperwork that I need to go undercover. I have my new identity as a vampire named Lily Stone, as well as all of the legal documents to support the story.
Dante laughs, "At least there are no necromancers this time. This should be way easier than that was, and you don’t have to deal with crazy people.” His mirth is not concealed as he grins from ear to ear, “And it could be worse, you could be at Fang’s Fast Blood and have to deal with hungry vampires. Fast food would definitely be worse.”
“True.” I laugh, “I have been to one, and the vampires are way too picky about it what they want.”
Derrick joins our laughter, “No necromancers at all, unless they are customers buying their items. The only creatures you will have to deal with are a few vampires, witches and werewolves. There is also the sorceress who is the owner of the store and her vampire lover Ren.” He smiles at me and his next words change the mood in the room, “I am really happy to see you in one piece. I know the last case was not easy for you. After this assignment, I want you to take a long far away vacation.” He pauses, “then you have to come back for another case.”
“No worries, I will come back to work,” I grin at him, “Honestly, I think a trip to the islands is in order. I want to learn to surf.” I look at Dante and he smiles.
Dante and I leave, walking side by side on our way to the car. I am hoping that the case is straightforward, but my history has taught me otherwise. I browse through the files Derrick gave me as Dante drives back to our home. Derrick’s note point to his suspicions he has about Fiona Stagea and my main purpose is to spy on her. Werewolves never do well at her store; they either quit quickly or disappear. Ren, her lover, was the last person that was seen with Shania. The two had been seen fighting a week before and no one had seen her since.
As I think about what going undercover in retail means, I begin to get angry. I won’t have weekends off anymore, not that I ever shop on weekends. I don’t like crowds so I tend to stay away from stores when they are crowded. I will have to deal with customers and I have seen how nasty some people are to retail workers. Many people take out their own problems on the employees, using them as verbal punching bags, which is not right and now I will have to deal with it. I used to work retail, and I hated it. I had to deal with all of the problems while I was trying to pay my way through witch school. I think about the amount of time it usually takes me to solve a case. The asylum took a few months, and that was after Nightshade woke me up from the drugs they were making me take.
“Thanks for that by the way,” I intone to Nightshade and I hear her laughter ringing through my head. At least I am never alone. I go back to my brooding and think about my time frame. There are only four months until Christmas, and even less before the shopping season ramps up. So I don’t lose my sanity again I decide I have to solve the case before then.
Many of the creatures in the Luxor realm used to live in the Crystal Crest realm, like me, and we tend to keep up the habits of our human lives. We celebrate the same holidays because it helps remind us of our humanity. The other downside to working the busiest season of the year in retail means that I will probably slip up and bite someone. Blood bags and donors have helped me conquer the urge but when my temper is high, I have been known to lose control.
Dante and I spend a magical weekend together before my new nightmare begins.

Pet Peeves of Cashiers!
Don’t get mad at the cashier over long lines since they have no control over it.
It’s not the cashier’s job to find an item that has a barcode, and they can’t move from the register. Make sure every item has one, or get a like item to avoid it.
Cashiers don’t control the prices so you can’t blame them for ringing it up wrong when all they do is scan, bag and hit a button.
If they bag items wrong don’t be rude about it instead be nice. Don’t make me cry because I will if you are that mean.
They have no control over your card don’t blame them for it.
Never be on your cell phone when checking out since if you want to be that rude I might actually double scan your items since you aren’t paying attention.
Never leave your cart by the corral or counter since you pass by it as you come out the door. Be nice and take it with you to the front.
In the parking lot put it in the cart place instead of leaving it in a parking spot.
Don’t make the comment “it’s nice day” to the cashier and then go “too bad you are stuck here.”
Never put your money on the counter instead put it in their hand.
“Never be rude to them and ignore their nice greeting.
Don’t leave items at the register put them away before you check out.
Use the divider when possible, and don’t be rude when saying it’s separate. A jerk actually said “aught” like I was a naughty child when he didn’t say when his stuff ended.
Don’t point out the difference between parsley and cilantro since I’m sure they know it. They are looking for the code to type in the system.
“You can’t use a gift card to get a gift card.
They know how to count change since the register does it. Give them the change before they close the register.
Don’t stand too close to the person in line give them space. I’ve even had a customer get in my space, and he said he was not trying to steal my pin like he was trying to be funny about the fact that he was too close.
If a coupon expires don’t yell at the cashier about it since you are too stupid to read the date.
Never give them boob or sock money since that is disgusting.
Grab your bags yourself and don’t blame the cashier for forgetting to give you your bags since it’s also your responsibility to get your stuff, too.
Don’t have your kids be rude in handing the cashier items. I had one kid glare at me, and hand me stuff forcefully.
Also your kids should not play on the bagging area. It’s annoying and I want to get you out as fast as possible.
Don’t be rude to the cashier if they ask you if you have a store card or want to donate. Politely decline but never bite their “heads off about it. Melissa tried to threaten my job if I didn’t ask it.
If the register is down or the machine doesn’t work then it’s not the cashiers fault and out of their control. Don’t yell at them about it.
If you want it bagged a certain way then be nice about it, and don’t get mad if you don’t speak up since we can’t read you mind.
Tell us when it’s a separate transaction.
We can also hear you if you make fun of us.
I really don’t care why you need a particular item get your shit and leave me alone so I can serve the next asshole.
Never wave cards, cash or checks in my face for the cards just shut up and use the reader. One bitch on a cell phone waved her money in my face like I didn't see it since she wasn’t paying attention I hated her for it.
Don’t run out to your car because you forgot your wallet and make sure you have it before you shop.
No, it won’t charge your card twice if you swipe it again. It will only charge you when you get the receipt.
Slide the card or insert it instead of telling me what you have since the register will say it.
It’s not hard to tell what kind of reader it is a chip reader has a slot at the bottom, and the regular one you just slide. You follow the directions, and stop staring blankly at the cashier like you can’t use your own card.
Don’t be rude or nasty and you won't end up being talked about by me or my coworkers; and every time you be rude to a retail person, you will be the laughing stock to their family and friends.
These pet peeves are common sense, and just being a decent human being. Treating “the cashier/sales associate like a person can make their day. I hope you learned how not to treat the person behind the counter, and that it made you laugh. Employees are people and not mindless robots. Treat them with kindness, and they will be nice right back.”
